The Five Second Test measures users' first impressions of an interface or design by briefly displaying an image and then collecting immediate reactions. This method helps assess clarity, visual appeal, and key takeaways from a design within a short exposure time. It’s particularly useful for evaluating homepage effectiveness, brand perception, and visual hierarchy to ensure that critical information stands out.
How to setup a Five Second Test
Step 1. Add a Five Second Test
Five Second Test is available in unmoderated studies. You can select + Add Task to select Five Second Test. In this task, an uploaded image will be displayed to the participants for the set duration and participant will not be able to proceed until the specified time passes.
Step 2. Add details and upload image
Add task title and description for the participants. Make sure to upload the image you want to test and specify the time (in seconds) to show the image.
Step 3. Preview the task
Once the image is uploaded, you can select Continue to preview how the image will be displayed. The remaining time will be shown in the preview mode and the actual study.
Best Practices
- Make sure to frame the task details as neutral and open-ended as possible. For example, instead of giving specific instructions like, "how visible is the CTA in the design concept?", frame the question as: "what would be your next steps be after seeing the design?" or "what stands out to you?"
Add follow-up questions like rating questions or open-ended text to gauge specific details and feedback from the participants.
