What is a Mobile Test?
Mobile Test is an unmoderated study task that lets you run usability tests or ask questions while participants interact with a live mobile website or app. Use it when you want to observe how users navigate your mobile product in a real setting, or collect feedback during live task completion.
- During the task, participants will be required to share their screen, video, and audio
- Participants complete the study on desktop, then switch to their mobile device when the mobile task begins.
- The Hubble Mobile Testing app is required to record screen activity, video, and audio during mobile testing sessions. It is currently available for both iOS and Android. Each mobile task generates a unique 6 digit code that participants enter in the app to start their session (see below).
When to Use It
- To observe how users navigate your mobile site or app in a real-world setting
- To identify where users get stuck or struggle during task completion
- To collect in-context feedback on specific flows or features
How to Set Up a Mobile Task
Step 1. Create a Mobile Task in your study builder
Under + Add Task, select Mobile Task. You'll be asked to enter a task title, an optional description, and a link for participants to open when the task begins.
Step 2. Fill in task details and app link
You're required to fill in the title and link to the mobile app. Please note that the preview text on the right is showing the instructions for the participants. The preview text will not update as you edit the title or description. Title and description are visible when the participants begin the task.
Step 3. Publish the study and share the study with your participants
Once participants submit their responses, their recordings including the screen and camera view will be visible in the task summary page.
How the task appears to participants
When prompted with a Mobile Test task, participants will receive a QR code or a direct link to download the Hubble Mobile Testing app from the iOS App Store. Clear, step-by-step instructions are provided to guide them through the installation process and help them get started smoothly.
Participants can refer to the instructions shown on their desktop as they set up the app and begin the mobile task.
The default screen in the app will appear as below. Clicking on Get Started will prompt to insert the 6-digit unique code that is generated for the particular mobile task.
You can insert the 6-digit code generated in the original study screen.
Participants will be prompted with step-by-step guide on how to get started on a task, see instructions, and complete it.
If it's their first time using the app, participants will be prompted to grant permission for both audio and video recording. They can proceed only after allowing both permissions.
Participants need to select Hubble, and select Start Broadcast. The iOS environment uses the term "broadcast" to refer to sharing the screen.
Participants can revisit the instructions and tips at any time by selecting the buttons that appear on the top right corner.
Once participants stop recording after completing the task, the following screen will appear to confirm their completion.
Participants can now return to the original test screen to continue the study. A confirmation message will indicate that the recording was successfully saved.
